Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is the first book in a multi-book series. There is also a graphic novel version of the story. You can read each new chapter for free on Webtoon as it is released. The chapters will later be collected into full books. I first read some of the graphic novel and then decided to read the book. The graphic novel removes some of the adult content, so it feels more teen-friendly than the book.
Carl is an ex-Coast Guard member who recently broke up with his cheating girlfriend. He is now alone with her prize-winning cat, Princess Donut. One snowy night, Princess Donut escapes, so Carl has to chase after her outside. He does this without pants or shoes because he is trying to save the cat from freezing.
Being outside saves both Carl and Princess Donut's lives. A huge alien attack causes buildings around the world to suddenly collapse. Almost everyone inside the buildings dies. Carl and Princess Donut are two of the few people who survive.
The aliens then gather the survivors and force them to take part in a deadly game show. Aliens from across space watch the game for entertainment. The game works like a video game, with levels, monsters, magic, and challenges. Carl and Princess Donut must fight goblins and other creatures if they want to stay alive.
This is just the beginning of their adventure. Carl and his cat must work together to survive the apocalypse and the strange game.
The book has a lot of adult content. There is drinking, smoking, peeing, violence, and even an AI-generated sex tape. It is a violent but funny adventure. People die, but there is also a talking cat. The aliens level up Princess Donut so she can become Carl's partner. She can now talk and use magic spells.
I read the large-print version from my local library. It also included a bonus short story told from the point of view of one of the goblins.
There are seven books in the series so far. Book eight, A Parade of Horribles, is coming out in 2026.
The second book in the series is called Carl’s Doomsday Scenario. Carl and Princess Donut continue their fight to survive the game. Carl still has no pants and no shoes. There is an important reason why, but I am not going to spoil it for you.
